Amara Kabineh Kabba was born in 1962 in Makeni, a central town in the northern part of Sierra Leone West Africa. Amara was one of three sons. Their father, who used to play the accordion, made Amara and his elder brother Nfagie decide to become musician.
They went to high school in the capital city of Freetown and joined many local bands. In the early 80-ties Amara went to Conackry, capital of neighbouring country Guinea to sing with Bongi Makeba's band, the beloved daughter 'The Empress of African song' Mariam Makeba. Amara returned back to Sierra Leone after the tragic death of Bongi.
Those days the beautiful Sierra Leone peninsula was very attractive to tourists. Live music was played every night in bars and hotels at the Lumly Beach. Amara and his brother Nfagie were gathering fame as Bintumani Rockers in the Bintumani hotel.
A real break-through as national stars came as soon as Sierra Afrik made a number 1 hit with Amara's song Paddul. A song about a popular mask-dance society. From this point the Kabba Brothers decided to form their own band the Kabba's.
They produced three albums: Tameraneh, Tae Go en Gumbay Time, many of their songs were played nationwide. Their sound became the typical Kabba-sound, a fusion of highlife, soukous and merengue.
An upcoming civil war paralysed tourist and entertainment industry in the country. And like the Kabba Brothers many citizens fled for Europe. Amara stranded in Amsterdam in 1995 and asked for political asylum. In Sierra Leone he used to be a celebrated musician, in Holland he had to start back again.
He choose reggae, music for the masses!
At the beginning of 1998 Amara met with AnneMarie Tiebosch, with whom he started to build a musical company. Their business should grow into a music studio for producing and promoting African talents in Amsterdam and in Freetown.
Amara did a master-course in audio engineering at Sound Academy in Hilversum. The name he gave his studio is Studio One pro, located in Amsterdam Bijlmer.
Shain Band was coming up - performIng at various summer festivals, the
- recordings for the roots-reggae album Confront it!
- and a release party at the National Pop Institute in Amsterdam.
In the summer of 2003 Amara, AnneMarie and daughter Kadija were proud to go (back) to Sierra Leone introducing the new Confront it! album. Their time there was wonderful, full of future plans. Until destiny scattered their lives: Amara lost his dear life at the Lumly Beach.
At the day of his funeral you could hear his songs blasting from the many speakers at every corner of the streets in Freetown. So soon after his return Sierra Leone lost a musical hero: Shain Amara. May his soul rest in perfect peace.
God bless' his loved ones.
Shain album Confront it! was rewarded "Best Album 2003" in Sierra Leone. Over 100.000 album copies were officially sold. And still there's no single day without hearing his songs on Sierra Leone radio.
Now, two years after the big loss of their frontman, Shainband in Amsterdam is ready again to continue his music.
