Winston Jarrett, né en 1944 à Lime Tree Gardens dans la paroisse de Saint Ann en Jamaïque, est un chanteur jamaïcain de reggae. Il fit partie du groupe The Flames qui accompagna Alton Ellis de 1965 à 1969 ; Après le départ de ce dernier pour l'Angleterre, Winston prit la tête du groupe qu'il rebaptisa The Righteous Flames. Il travailla pour Coxsone Dodd durant les années 1970.

The Congos est un groupe de reggae jamaïcain formé en 1977 par Cedric Myton et Roydel Johnson. Ce nom a été choisi car c'est le Congo qui a fourni le plus fort contingent d'esclaves à la Jamaïque. Ce duo est repéré par Lee Perry. Accompagné du baryton Watty Burnett, qui deviendra par la suite le troisième membre du groupe, il enregistre la même année Heart of the Congos dans les studios Black Ark à Kingston. Le groupe sort deux ans plus tard l'album Congo Ashanti. Roydel Johnson quitta le groupe en 1979, après la sortie de Congo Ashanti, pour une carrière solo en Angleterre. Le groupe, séparé de Roy Johnson, sortit encore deux albums avant de se séparer. Cedric Myton et Watty Burnett se retrouvèrent à la fin des années 90 mais il faudra attendre 2006 et la sortie de l'album Swinging Bridge pour revoir enfin le groupe au complet.

Ce groupe est considéré comme l'une des plus belle harmonies jamaïquaines, en particulier avec l'album Heart of the Congos.

Reggae groovy. Brahim a rodé son alchimie ragga & groove en écumant les scènes françaises au sein du Wadada Sound System. Dix ans de travail pour un premier album fraichement baptisé Dans Quel Monde On Vit. Ce disque fascine à plusieurs titres : un mélange de groove et de reggae absolument unique comme une véritable machine à danser, des arrangements de cuivres élégants et racés, un phrasé dans la lignée des authentiques taosters jamaïcains ainsi qu'une parfaite maitrise des compositions et des textes. ADJI, formation bordelaise séduisante, a édité « Roots & Steady Beat ». Cet opus contient huit titres d'une chaleur intense, un swing voguant entre rocksteady, ska et calypso ! Le groupe connaît déjà les scènes européennes. On est séduit ! Bravo ! ! ! 

Une histoire qui débute en mai 2000 avec 4 gars, leurs instruments sous le bras (une basse, une batterie, un orgue et une guitare). Rapidement rejoints par un chanteur et son trombone, Fabio, la joyeuse bande a choisi son créneau: la musique des Caraïbes et afro-américaine.

Fin 2001, une touche féminine est ajoutée à l'aventure avec Kristel, chanteuse.

Quelques mois plus tard (mars 2002), le groupe s'oriente vers la musique jamaïcaine grâce à sa rencontre avec deux maîtres du genre: Martin Sparrow et Skully Simms.

S'ensuivent quelques mois de travail intensifs et, en juillet 2002, le premier album est dans la boîte. La suite logique de l'aventure ne tarde pas, quelques scènes importantes et un public qui semble apprécier le son et l'énergie de la formation.

La Jamaïque et le reggae semblent leur convenir et faire des heureux parmi ceux qui aiment ce style musical. Ca ne colle pas aux classiques du genre mais c'est bien de la musique du soleil, y a pas photo.

Sur scène, la chaleur semble elle aussi au rendez-vous, alors pourquoi pas ? Vive les rapports humains ! Adji semblent être de ces groupes qui les aiment et y croient.

Entre rythmes reggae et textes francophones, les membres du groupe semblent avoir trouvé un équilibre qui leur convient et un public pour les écouter... Roots and Steady Beat a pour objectif de conquérir un public plus vaste. A n'en pas douter, ils trouveront des auditeurs, ceux qui aiment le soleil, le reggae et la musique francophone.

C'est toute l'histoire du reggae qui nous est révélée dans ce disque.

Le groupe Mystic Revelation of Rastafari a été créé à la fin des années 40, les musiciens y jouaient une musique héritée de l'esclavage, n'utilisant pour s'exprimer que le chant et les tambours primitifs venus d'Afrique. Il fut longtemps dirigé par Count Ossie, décédé en 1976, c'est Samuel Clayton (Brother Sam) qui en a pris depuis les rênes. Il est à noter que quelques musiciens d'origine sont toujours présents.

Le disque commence par des morceaux issus de cette tradition (écoutez le classique By The Rivers of Babylon), puis au fil des plages, on y retrouve les différentes influences (ska, rythm'n'blues…) qui ont amenées la musique jamaïquaine à son avènement au milieu des années 70. La basse électrique et les cuivres s'ajoutent aux percussions pour nous faire reconnaître le reggae d'aujourd'hui.

Si le disque commence de façon un peu austère, le temps de méditer, il se termine dans une ambiance festive qui ne laissera personne indifférent.

Willi Williams (ou Willie Williams) est né en 1953 dans le comté de Saint Ann, en Jamaïque.

Il enregistre le titre Calling pour Coxsone Dodd en 1968; cette chanson se trouve sur la compilation sortie la même année Party Time In Jamaica aux cotés de Hello Carol des Gladiators (enregistré le même jour) ou des formidables instrumentaux des Sound Dimension: Reggae Rock, In the Mood et le fameux Jericho Rock. Il fonde avec deux amis le sound system Triple Zone et enregistre en 1969 Prisoners Of Loneliness, un titre autoproduit qui sort sur son label Soul Sound comme les titres Get Ready et Love Zone. Il produit quelques titres pour Delroy Wilson ou The Versatiles et s'installe à Toronto au Canada en 1974, où il se lie d'amitié avec Jackie Mittoo. Leur collaboration donna lieu à certains titres, Jahquarius, Come along ou Repatriation Song Qui sortent sur le label de Jackie Mittoo, Stine Jac.

En 1979, Willi Williams enregistre également Unity et Messenger Man qui attire l'attention de Coxsone Dodd et débouche sur son grand Armagideon Time enregistré sur le riddim du Real Rock des Sound Dimension. Un titre qui donna la même année le Nice up the dance de Michigan And Smiley. Cette chanson est en parfaite adéquation avec l'esprit punk et attire rapidement l'attention du groupe The Clash. Ces derniers la reprennent, en façe B du classique London Calling, ainsi que sur leur album Black Market Clash.

Il enregistre Armagideon Man une version de son grand classique pour Vivian Jackson (il fait même partie un temps du line up des Prophets) et en sort une autre version Rocking Universally qui obtient un franc succès au Canada et en Europe. Il enregistre encore chez Studio One, les singles Jah Righteous Plan, No One Can Stop Us et Addis Ababa, et son album Armagideon Time, contenant des versions longues de Master Plan, People, et de son populaire Armagideon Time. En 1980, sort Messenger Man sur Jah Muzik au Canada avec: I man, Valley Of Jehosephat, Zion Town, Messenger Man ou Give Jah Praise.

The Boston reggae-ska revival band's third album is a trip through the roots of 1960s Jamaican music, from the U.S. R&B-influenced "Travel On" to the pure reggae swing of "Please Forgive Me."

This 2006 Hellcat debut from Boston's acclaimed ska septet places the band on a growing list of "new traditionalists", bands like the Aggrolites and the Slackers that bridge the gap between 60's reggae, soul, and blues and modern approaches, with touches of jazz and country. While sharing the stage with heavy hitters like The Toasters, The Mighty Mighty Bosstones, The Street Dogs, Reel Big Fish, and The Skatalites, Westbound Train have forged their own sound, where highly danceable ska arrangements and rock steady beats are in ample supply.

A blind listening test to the debut album from the Kingston, Jamaica, outfit Rootz Underground might leave listeners guessing that the disc was recorded in the early 1980s. MOVEMENT was actually released in 2008, but its style--pure roots rock reggae--recalls the crisp sound of second wave roots bands like Steel Pulse and Black Uhuru. Yet Rootz Underground isn't merely a retro outfit; their updated take on classic Rasta grooves is vital and refreshing. Here is the debut album from Arkaingelle, an up-and-coming roots singer deeply inspired by rasta beliefs, hailing from Guyana who emigrated to the US in his teens. This new piece released in late March marks the meeting between the reggae scenes from Virgin Islands, United States and Guyana, a little country on the Caribbean coast of South America. Despite no Jamaican collaborations on O’Pen, it is conscious modern roots reggae for sure. The whole set is produced by the singer and multi instrumentalist Blaak Lung of Oakland (CA) based label Green Sphere, who already released albums by the female singer Malika Madremana -here on backing vocals- and Batch.

Across 13 tracks, the Rasta singer Arkaingelle delivers solid and conscious lyrics about slavery days and freedom (‘Rememba’) or corruption and injustice (‘Burn’, ‘O’Pen’, ‘Attacking’) over tough riddims played by All Star Virgin Islands musicians, including Midnite members.

O’Pen is a fresh release gathering spiritual, positive and smooth songs (‘Manifest Joy’, ‘Giving Tanx’, ‘Inna Manna’) and several heavy tunes (‘Yaddin A Da Hillz’, ‘Run Come’, ‘A Chord In G Ly’…), which proves Arkaingelle is a gifted promising vocalist with a energic flow over heavy V.I style riddims. Lovers of the captivating VI sound won’t be disapointed ; and If you’re tired of the gangsta ras ‘concept’, you will also probably appreciate this release.

The Itals est un groupe de reggae roots jamaïcain, formé en 1975 par Ronnie Davis, Keith Porter et Lloyd Ricketts.

Les trois membres des Itals avaient déja entamé une carrière solo ; Davis et Ricketts chantaient également au sein du groupe rocksteady The Tennors.

Leur premier morceau Ina Dis Ya Time, (avec Keith Porter au lead vocal) sur le riddim de Won't You Come Home de Ronnie Davis, sera leur plus grand tube en Jamaïque.

En 1987, le chanteur David Isaacs remplace Lloyd Ricketts lorsque celui-ci est condamné à une peine de prison, ce qui l'empêche de se rendre aux États-Unis. Ronnie Davis quitte le groupe en 1994 pour poursuivre sa carrière solo, et chante désormais sous le nom de Ronnie Davis & Idren.

Prince Far I est un toaster et producteur de reggae et dub de la Jamaïque, né Michael James Williams en 1945 dans le quartier de Spanish Town à Kingston et mort assassiné le 15 septembre 1983. The Pioneers est un groupe de musique jamaïcaine formé en 1962, ses membres sont à l'époque Winston Hewitt et les frères Crooks, Sydney Crooks (Né en 1945) et Derrick Crooks. Quand ils rentrent en studio en 1965 chez Leslie Kong pour enregistrer le titre ska Sometime, Winston Hewitt a été remplacé par Glen Adams. Sydney Crooks entre au studio Caltone en 1967. Adams étant devenu musicien de studio et Cedric Crooks parti, Sydney Crooks se retrouve seul, il recrute un jeune vocaliste, Jackie Robinson (Né en 1951) avec lequel il peut enregistrer le morceau qui arrive rapidement en tête des charts jamaïcains : "Gimme Little Loving", produit par Joe Gibbs. Puis vient Long Shot, titre évoquant une race de pur-sang jamaïcain. De nouveau trio avec l'arrivée de George Agard, aussi appelé Johnny Melody (De son vrai nom George Dekker, né en 1946), poussé par son frère ainé qui n'est autre que Desmond Dekker, ils enregistrent à nouveau pour Leslie Kong sous le nom des Slickers puis des Pioneers pour le hit Long Shot (Kick De Bucket), suite du titre Long Shot, qui aura un succès certain au Royaume-Uni atteignant la 21e place des charts.

Un mois après leur apparition dans les charts britanniques, le groupe traverse l'Atlantique pour faire leur promotion, backé par le groupe Sweet Blindness. Le label britannique Trojan sort en 1969 un album des titres enregistrés pour Leslie Kong, Long Shot. En 1970, le groupe sort le LP Battle Of The Giants, toujours pour Leslie Kong, où l'influence du rythm'n'blues américain est désormais prégnante. Toujours la même année, ils enregistrent le single Starvation, dénonçant la famine au Nigeria pendant la guerre du Biafra. Vers la fin de l'année, ils s'associent à Jimmy Cliff pour sortir plusieurs singles dont Let Your Yeah Be Yeah, enregistré plus tôt dans l'année par Cliff. La musique des Pioneers est désormais un mélange pop-reggae plus destiné à une audience européenne que jamaïcaine et le groupe cherche à éviter d'être catalogué "groupe reggae". Au milieu de l'année 1971, Let Your Yeah Be Yeah arrivera à la 5e place des charts britanniques, année qui marquera le groupe par le décès de leur producteur, Leslie Kong, d'une attaque cardiaque. Néanmoins, ils continuent de tourner dans de nombreux pays comme le Liban, l'Irlande ou l'Égypte, enregistrant aussi un nouvel album, Yeah.

Jimmy Riley was born Martin James Norman Riley on May 22, 1954 in Kingston, Jamaica. His first success came as a member of The Sensations (with Cornell Campbell, Aaron "Bobby" Davis, and his brother, Buster Riley), who recorded such hits as "Everyday Is Just a Holiday" for Duke Reid's Treasure Isle label in the mid-1960s. Riley left the Sensations in 1967, and with Slim Smith and Lloyd Charmers, became part of the second incarnation of The Uniques. The Uniques only lasted a little over a year, but recorded such enduring classics as "My Conversation" during that time. As a solo singer and writer, Riley worked with a host of Jamaican producers, including Bunny Lee and Lee "Scratch" Perry, before settling in with Sly and Robbie in the early 1980s, whose production on Riley's version of Marvin Gaye's "Sexual Healing" helped the song top the reggae charts in 1983. ~ Steve Leggett, All Music Guide

"On the Rock" is Israel Vibration's 1995 studio album, and it does not fail to satisfy. From MR. CONSULAR MAN to ON THE ROCK, the vibes offer non stop roots and culture music, even though tracks like SUGAR ME and LOVE IS ALL WE NEED offer softer sides to the group. The standouts on this album are MR. CONSULAR MAN, with Wiss offering a personal perspective in his lyrics over a crucial reggae rythm. The song starts off the album in perfect fashion. The story he sings about in this song is true. AMBUSH will instantly put you in the same mood as Bob Marley's BAD CARD, as AMBUSH has a similar groove and bass line as the Bob Marley hit. In AMBUSH, Apple offers great lines that can be heard in various Bob Marley songs. RUDEBOY SHUFFLIN, the single from the album, is one of Israel Vibration's best-known songs. Absolute reggae offered by Apple on that track. Wiss' BORDERLINE is another absolute standout, as he addresses the many problems faced in the world today. The music really shines on this one. And, of course ON THE ROCK shows Skelly showing concern to all those locked in captivity. ON THE ROCK finishes of the album with a great vibe. You can truly feel the power as Skelly screams "JAH!!!" towards the end of the track. Overall, "On the Rock" is a great album, and the first time Israel Vibration used 12 tracks on an album.
